Close Reading in First Grade

Learning HOW to read is IMPORTANT in 1st grade. But

learning how to THINK about what we read is important, too.

Here's a 1st grade example of a Close Read to enhance and

build reading comprehension.

Chicken Wing Dissections

I had a Wonderful Wing day at Anniston Middle School! The instructional coach and I were assisting the 7th grade science teacher with chicken wing dissections and classroom management of a science lab.

These 7th graders were very impressive! They not only used proper lab procedures, but also implemented their classroom knowledge to apply their skills! We coined the term "chicken wing surgeons" to describe the effectiveness of their skills.

What a passion we were instilling in 12-13 year olds! A huge shout out to Mrs. Houston for making a difference in the lives of these precious middle school students!!

However, I may NEVER eat chicken again!  ~ARI RSS Keitha Segrest
